Project success through customized governance

Agile or traditional/waterfall? Or maybe SCRUM? KANBAN? LEAN? XP? PMBOK? PRINCE2? SAFe? LESS? DAD?

The confusion can easily increase the more you ask or the more you read.

Often a hybrid of methods is suitable and it is always good to adapt, a little or a lot, the method to the project, the organization and the situation.

Agile work at team level

  • Agile methodology: The work is iterative and incremental, focusing on flexibility and rapid adaptation to changing conditions. Scrum and Kanban are a couple of the most well-known agile frameworks.
  • Scrum: A well-known agile methodology that uses short, timeboxed iterations - sprints. It focuses on collaboration, customer feedback, and small increments of improvement. Read more at Scrum.org.
  • Kanban: A visual methodology that uses graphical overview such as whiteboard and cards to manage workflows and improve processes. It is flexible and can be used to handle both small and large projects. Read more at Kanban University.
  • Lean: A methodology that aims to maximize customer value while minimizing waste. It focuses on continuous improvement and efficient use of resources. Read more at Lean Enterprise Institute.
  • XP (Extreme Programming): An agile methodology characterized by technical excellence and customer satisfaction through short development cycles, constant feedback, and the highest possible quality. XP includes practices such as pair programming, test-driven development, and continuous integration. Read more at Extreme Programming.

Agile work in larger organizations

  • SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework): A popular methodology for large organizations that helps scale agile work by combining agile development, lean product development, and system thinking. Read more at Scaled Agile.
  • LeSS (Large-Scale Scrum): A framework that scales up Scrum in large organizations. Focused on maintaining the simplicity and flexibility of Scrum but still managing the complexity of large projects. Read more at LeSS.

  • Nexus: A framework for scaling up Scrum by coordinating multiple Scrum teams working on the same product. Read more at Scrum.org Nexus.

Traditional project management (waterfall)

  • Waterfall method: A sequential project or method in which each phase must be completed before the next begins. It is easy to understand and use and is also called traditional method but can be rigid and less flexible to change.
  • PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments): A process-based methodology with details and structure in the method for project management. Flexible and can be adapted to different types of projects. Read more at AXELOS.
  • PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge): A framework of standards and guidelines that define good practice in project management. It is comprehensive and covers all aspects of project management. Read more on PMI
